 Dr. Jasmine Maria Mitchell is Assistant Professor of American Studies and Media Studies at the State University of New York-Old Westbury. She received her Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota. She is the author of the forthcoming book, Imagining the Mulatta: Blackness in U.S. and Brazilian Media (University of Illinois Press), which examines how media representations of mixed black women function as contested symbols of multiracial harmony and anti-blackness. From television to celebrity culture to sports,

her research focuses on transnational constructions of mixed blackness, gender, sexuality, and national identity in U.S. and Brazilian public spheres.
