Miguel A. Valerio earned his Ph.D. in Latin American colonial studies from The Ohio State
University. He is currently Assistant Professor of Spanish at Washington University in St. Louis.
His research focuses on Afrodescendants’ festive and ritual practices in the early modern Iberian
world (15 th -18 th centuries). His work has appeared in Afro-Hispanic Review, Confraternitas, and
the edited volume Afro-Catholic Festivals in the Americas (Pennsylvania State University Press,
2019), edited by CĂ©cile Fromont. He is currently wrapping up his first book, The Black Kings
and Queens of Colonial Mexico City: Identity, Performance, and Power, 1539-1640.
